What is PBS?

If you were to ask Google or Alexa what PBS stands for, you’d get hundreds of answers, but in the care sector it stands for Positive Behavioural Support.

But even that doesn’t really tell you what PBS is all about and why the job of a PBS worker or PBS partner is such an important, motivating and rewarding role.

In a nutshell, it’s all about…

Making people’s lives better

Basically, our PBS colleagues have a direct, immediate and long-term impact in improving the quality of life for the individuals they support, every day.

At Home From Home Care, PBS workers help individuals with complex physical and mental health needs to live their lives to the fullest. That includes helping them to try out new things, engage in exciting activities and be active within the wider community. It also means looking out for them and making sure they’re fit, healthy and happy.

This is achieved through a combination of hands-on support, user observations, and the creation of PBS Plans which are based on functional assessments about each individual.

Every day is completely different, with exciting and fun activities taking place to encourage the individuals we support to try new things, learn new skills and connect with the community. So one day you might be taking a trip to the beach, the next you’ll be visiting the shops before cooking a meal together and going to the cinema. The work is hugely varied and lots of fun.

Jack, PBS Partner, said:

“I have completely grown in confidence in my role as a PBS worker – it’s helped me to boost my communication skills with colleagues and individuals, and also made me more well-rounded too.”

Hannah, Personal Support Worker, said:

“The sense of reward that you get from changing someone’s life is incredible”

Career prospects for a PBS worker

At Home From Home Care, there are four levels which our colleagues progress through based on their experience and talents after joining us as a PBS worker. The fourth level is the role of Senior PBS Partner but this is by no means the top of the career ladder… and it’s not really a ladder either. It’s more like a climbing frame… you don’t have to keep moving up in a straight line, you can move sideways or diagonally while still climbing upward.

With us, you can also progress toward any of our 95+ other job roles, with schemes to help you try out new career paths and explore emerging interests. This means you could start as a level one PBS Worker and progress to a senior role, or something else entirely!

And although we have a very diverse range of roles here, we all work together as ONE TEAM.

Adi, Senior PBS Partner, said:

“The mentoring support at Home From Home Care has been phenomenal. I have benefited a lot from the coaching, mentoring and development that I receive as part of my job role.”

Luke, PBS Manager, said:

“We have a really great mentoring scheme within the PBS team, including Senior PBS Partners and PBS Managers that are on hand to help to support and guide you through all aspects of your role.”
