Empathy. Compassion. Ambition. A desire to change lives for the better.
These are some of the qualities we look for in a great support worker at Home From Home Care.
Making a Difference Every Day
It’s not necessarily about having years of experience supporting adults with learning disabilities and complex needs or knowing everything about care. It’s about understanding a person, learning what matters to them and helping them live life on their own terms.
A big part of a support work role at Home From Home Care is to help individuals gain new life skills, connect with their communities and live a fulfilled and meaningful life. This could mean doing things you might never expect from a career in care…
Horse riding? Go-karting? Kayaking? Rock climbing?
Yes – really!
Improving the lives of others
Our support workers work as part of our ONE TEAM to support adults with learning disabilities, autism and complex needs.
That might include helping with everyday things such as:
- Developing independent living skills
- Shopping and cooking
- Accessing the community
- Attending appointments
- Building confidence and social skills
- Trying new activities
But it’s not just about practical support.
It’s about helping people pursue their interests, aspirations and dreams.
One individual we support wanted to try go-karting. Our colleagues helped make it happen and he’s now a regular racer!
Another wanted to organise a neon rave with his friends. With support from his team, he brought his idea to life.
And when someone dreamed of visiting Disneyland Paris, our colleagues helped make that happen too.
What qualities make a great support worker?
While every support worker is different, some qualities really matter.
Empathy – naturally caring, patient and reliable
Compassion – treating people with kindness, dignity, patience and respect.
Ambition – not just for yourself, but for the people you support. Seeing possibilities rather than limitations.
A desire to make a difference – understanding that support work is about much more than completing tasks. It’s about being part of someone’s journey.
You’ll also use skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, organisation and adaptability.
Do you need experience to become a support worker?
No!
We welcome people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Previous care experience isn’t essential, what matters is that you share our values and genuinely want to make a difference.
Once you join Home From Home Care, you’ll have opportunities to learn, develop and build your career. With over 100 different career roles, there are plenty of ways to discover your strengths and find where you can make the biggest impact.
